Long-Married Couple Die Holding Hands


For one Iowa couple, true love lasted until the very end.
Married 72 years, Norma, 90, and Gordon Yeager, 94, died in the hospital holding hands last week, one hour apart.

We can say with some certainty what our plans will be on any given day. We may start with coffee, a shower or some exercise. Most of us go to work or school from Monday to Friday. Saturday is for shopping and errands. Sunday’s we wake up late; go to brunch or a church service. Maybe you get up and create art or work nights. A routine is not a bad thing, affording us the comfort to stretch emotionally and physically without distraction. However we have learned from experience that our comfortable routine can be jarringly disrupted. Tragedy strikes. We go to work and lose our job. A relative is stricken with a serious illness. Acceptance

This is a wild world we live in. There is never a quiet moment. There is political unrest, economic downturns, famine, genocide, bombings all stirring things up. Just when you settle down with a nice cup of coffee something happens, the upstairs neighbors begin to fight, the phone rings, you hear something on the TV that aggravates you.

Twenty eight years ago when my mother died I could accept her death. She had suffered terribly with a chronic illness. She had lost a leg and after six months in the hospital both her mind and body had grown weak. My sister and I were also tired and emotionally wrenched. I would have gladly accepted her full recovery. But I could not accept her continued suffering.
